Davlat Toshev: guardian and master of the Bukhara miniature

Davlat Boronovich Toshev was born in 1975 on the ancient soil of Bukhara — a land whose very architecture and the spirit of whose old streets are steeped in history. From his earliest years he was drawn to the contemplative world of the Eastern manuscript, to the delicate line of antique illustration and to the harmony of nature. This vivid youthful passion shaped the whole of his later life.

After finishing school, Davlat set out for Namangan, where for three years he received a thorough training under master Bakhtiyor Khanafiev. It was there that the deep foundation of his craft was laid — his first artistic grounding, a fine feeling for colour and a conscious understanding of traditional painting. Working alongside his brother, master Davron Toshev, was another important stage: his brother brought academic precision to his art, helped him refine his technique, structure his knowledge and give his works professional maturity. Having absorbed the traditional secrets of composition and the subtleties of working with natural pigments and silk paper, Davlat Toshev created his first independent pieces, which quickly won respect among fellow professionals.

The art of Davlat Toshev has become a living bridge between the centuries-old traditions of Bukhara and lovers of fine art all over the world. His path to international recognition began with the project “Craftsmen of Central Asia” in Almaty at the turn of the 2000s. His works soon won over European audiences: the master's exhibition map covers the key cultural centres of France — from shows in Paris, Lyon, Grenoble and Marseille to solo exhibitions in Thionville, Lille and Longmamaison, as well as participation in the large-scale project “L'histoire de la peinture miniature”.

His paintings were shown as part of the “Days of Uzbekistan” in Bonn, represented the Uzbek school at the prestigious cultural forum in Santa Fe, USA, and were displayed in the exhibition halls of Sion in Switzerland and Al-Fahm in Israel. Each of these solo and group shows opened the poetic, filigree world of the Eastern miniature to foreign viewers and collectors.

Alongside creating new works, the master pays particular attention to preserving historical heritage, carrying out the delicate restoration of ancient books and manuscripts. For him this is not merely work with paper and paint, but a way of bringing the fading fragments of written culture back to life.

A separate and important milestone in his career was the revival of the “Abru-Bahor” (“Spring Cloud”) technique. This most intricate ancient art of paper marbling, whose historical homeland is Bukhara, had over time been almost entirely lost in its native land. Working together with researchers from Bukhara State University, Davlat Toshev pieced together the authentic recipes and methods of applying the patterns, restoring to Bukhara its status as the centre of this unique and refined craft.

In 2019 the master founded the “Ustoz-Shogird” (Master — Apprentice) Centre of Traditional Applied Arts. It is not merely a place of study, but a living ecosystem in which ancient traditions are passed on from hand to hand, from heart to heart.

Today more than 100 students under the guidance of Davlat Toshev are mastering the subtleties of the Bukhara miniature, classical calligraphy, the fine art of book restoration and the “Abru-Bahor” technique. The centre's students have already earned recognition at international competitions and festivals, proving that the Bukhara school of miniature has not merely been preserved as a museum exhibit, but is actively developing and alive.

The name of Davlat Toshev and his works are rightfully included in the National Catalogue of Masters of Folk Art of Uzbekistan. His life and his labour are a continuous service to art, in which every line on silk paper becomes a continuation of a centuries-old story.
